Faire
2000

It's the 20th Anniversary of Scarborough Faire! A lot has changed at Scarborough in 20 years; in fact, a lot has changed since last year! The Mud Pit has been moved to the far end of Holly Field and there is a new stage at the Dirty Duck Tavern right next door. There is a new Armory Museum and the barnyard petting zoo has been relocated ... but the chickens still have to watch out for the jousters! There are more picnic tables, more shaded seating, and more Flushies!

Those handsome rogues Hack and Slash (that's Slash on the left and Hack on the right) have finally made it to Texas. And there is a new comedy juggling act, Throw Up (well, new to Scarborough ... they can also be seen at that other Renaissance festival outside of Houston ). Gibbon the Troubadour is back after several years away. And there is at least one guest performer every week.

There are some new merchants and guest merchants: Laughing Frog (lampwork jewelry), Ophelia (clothing), and Old Woman Soap are just a few of them. And all of my favorites are back as well, including Lady McArthur's Fiery Fare and Highland Anvil.

I feel incomplete this year since I didn't make closing day. I didn't get to wear my bell-bottom tights to Faire! Why didn't I make closing day? Well, it rained all day Saturday (not on site, but everywhere else) and it rained all Saturday night. The weather didn't look too bad Sunday morning when I left home. But then I got stuck, in heavy rain, on I-35E south of downtown Dallas, behind an accident that looked like it shut down the interstate entirely. I sat in the rain for an hour going nowhere. When I finally got to an exit, I looked back and saw nothing but headlights stretching back into the rain all the way to downtown. I looked the other way and saw taillights stretching south. Then I looked to my right and saw rising water. I said a naughty word (or two or three ...) and started driving. As I'm driving along on what used to be the shoulder of the road, in heavy rain, through a constuction zone where I have a concrete barrier to my left, and a steep drop-off to the right down to the surging water, listening to the weather report on the radio talk about flash floods in Dallas, Tarrent, Ellis and Parker counties, I decided to just go home and sit it out. It rained until I got within 2 miles of home. So I turned on the Weather Channel, and the weather radar showed an isolated pocket of no-rain right over Plano (where I live in Far, Far North Dallas almost Oklahoma) and rain, rain, rain everywhere else. Heavy rain. With thunderboomers. I thought about the parking lot. I thought about how much mud there was on Saturday. And I wimped out.

But, although I didn't get in that last minute shopping, and I missed the closing day bell-bottom tights extravaganza, I did get lots and lots of pictures from all the other days I went to Faire. And I found out 2 things about my new camera. Motor drives are fun! You can catch a lot of action that normally would be missed. Motor drives are also expensive! I shot 40 rolls of film at Scarborough this year!

Blue Boys at Faire Pair Where can you find the best looking men in tights? At Faire Pair of course! Marshall and Jonathon model Liquid Velvet and Crushed Velvet, proving once again that real men do wear tights. Gibbon the Troubadour Gibbon is back!
He's a little bit of the old Gibbon, but a lot more new Gibbon (the ladies think the new whiskers are sooo sexy) but he's still everyone's favorite troubadour.
Don Juan & Miguel Don Juan and Miguel have moved from their old stage (it's now the Mud Pit) to the "big" stage in the Crown Meadow (which isn't much of a meadow any more). Check out the "El Dorado" show ... it covers just about all of Europe! Queen Anne's Revenge What do you get when you mix Queen Anne's Lace with The Corsairs? Queen Anne's Revenge of course! I like QAL, and the Corsairs are my all-time favorite singing pirates. Together they create a high-energy show that has just enough bawdiness to please anyone.
Dragon Eggs
Who needs Easter Eggs when there are fresh Dragon Eggs available?
Throw Up The Flaming Idiots may be gone, but there is a new comedy juggling act in the village. Throw Up performs their special brand of antics at the Crown Theater. These guys are good; I first saw them at Cavalier Dayes in Austin and was impressed then. And I think Matt is cute, but then, I like tall, dark men.

Be patient. This GIF is rather large.
I've waited a long time for Hack and Slash to come to Scarborough, and they are finally here! Sir Nigel Hack is a wealthy knight and gentleman of the world and Slash Montant is his handsome, roguish squire. Swords, crossbows, whips and other ... toys, er ... implements of mayhem (yeah!) are all part of their unique brand of entertainment. Visit Hack and Slash at the Gypsy Stage. Cheer! Flirt! You will have a good time!
And don't forget to check out SlashCam when you visit hackandslash.com .
Hack and Slash
Next to the Gypsy Stage you will find dombecks, bodhrans, and many other drums at Healing Earth Drums. The sound of a drum depends not only on its shape, but on the tautness of the drum head as well. The ability to lace a drum head properly is a critical skill for any drum maker. At Laughing Frog Designs Jennifer creates glass beads using the technique of lampworking. Each bead is hand made, and then combined with sterling silver fittings to create unique jewelry. She made me a bead that has a little froggie sitting on a pond. I was going to give it to a friend for Christmas, but somehow it made it to my china, er, glass cabinet and I think it's going to stay there.
Smee & Blog Shakespeare on a Shingle and Smee & Blogg, The Singing Executioners were just two of the guest artists appearing on The Brothers Stage this year. Evan (on the right) and Bottom (on the left) performed their widely acclaimed masterpieces such as Dueling Hamlets while Smee and Blogg (I must admit, I don't know which is which) entertained the crowd with song and tale. Shakespeare on a Shingle

And then there are the people ...
Most of the folke in the pictures below are patrons, although a few cast members and merchants may have snuck in.

Spencer's new outfit And this one is just because I promised.

Is Spencer (Slash) auditioning for Isis and the Star Dancers?
I'm posting this on June 7.
How long will it take Spencer to see this picture?
Will he speak to me again after seeing this?
Is it safe for me to go to Maryland?
Whose white beaded bra is that?

No belly dancers where harmed in the making of this image.
